I was there- AMAZING race- Yoshimura was there waiting with a contract to sign Kevin before any other manufacturer had a chance including team Honda - he signed the contract 5 minutes after the race was over, and the rest in history

Insanely beautiful! I had 2 buddies who owned the 250cc model of that same model year CZ and those bikes rocked and looked gorgeous! Lucky you, Gary! Well done!

Don’t get too emotional. I had a 1972 380 and they handled unpredictably due to swingarm flex which wasn’t nearly so obvious on the 250. They were powerful and reliable The 380 CZ was the screamer of the 500 class. They were all steel and very heavy but the CG was low so the bike was quite manageable. The swing arm flex caused the rear to “step out” left and right under full power and just might put the rider on the ground. Not good…. The swing arm was redesigned to be much stronger when the red frame CZs were introduced a couple of years later. An aftermarket swingarm was mandatory for anybody planning on going fast.

Earl Roloff was the man back then. Took all the contingency money from Kawasaki from the new 250 Ninja class, 600ss on a bike no one else was even racing, all the way up to the Terminator 1000 ninja which somehow could beat the new GSXR1100. I was just starting out at that time but I raced in the Willow Springs Road Racing Association instead of AFM to start. IN 89 I bought the Vance and Hines '88 600ss Honda Hurricane and we won the overall (open class included) endurance championship that year, 90 we switched to WERA (and Yamaha )and did their national endurance series (we won a few races that year and got 4th at the grand national finals at Road Atlanta with a borrowed showroom stock bike) and 91 the AMA endurance series on a showroom stock + just an exhaust Kawasaki ZX-6 (that no one else was racing . . contingency money! . . . . except Michael Barnes was just starting out on a Muzzy prepared ZX-6, we learned how to over ride in the corners at Brainard that day to keep him in sight)..

Gary, looks like there was only one class in this race. Sounds like some in-line 4's so that means GSXR 750's. What class was this? What was the eventual finishing order? This looks similar to another vid you posted of Jimmy at Willow a while back from the same year, I believe. . Guessing it's a different race.

Willow is a deceptively simple layout - until you try to cut a fast lap time. Then it becomes hair raising!

Very impressive timing on that last lap draft pass for second!

Thanks to the camera man, I just listened to Kevin talk about this race weekend a week ago, the beginning of an outstanding racing career. I know he raced in motocross and road endurance before this but I think this was his start with Yoshimura.

My 2nd novice race. Called my name when I was in 7th. Red flag when I was in 4th. Could have been a podium but, oh well. This was my 2nd novice race and since I did well and it was cut short by the red flag, they let me run the 600 MP expert class later in the day. I went from 32nd to 14th so I felt on top of the world for a rookie on a stock bike.

That was a fun race!

I wish I could find the 7/19/87 600 Novice race as it was my first race ever. I started 27th and finished 7th. So cool to hear all the familiar names in these videos.

The announcer mentioned Jim Dobar who in one race had crashed in front of me on the inside of nine and he had paid Redline for the video and I was 2nd in line behind him. So the only tape I was in was after Jim went down. I still have it on VHS and really need to get it on digital format. So far I haven't found it on your page but, I seem to be closing in.

My 1st crash at Willow was in turn 3 when I caught a false neutral and downshifted into 1st when I thought I was gong to be in 2nd and bucked me right off. The next time was after dicing with another FZ600 for several laps I decided I was going to drive hard out of 4 to leave him and instead low-sided and he almost ran me over, lol. Such fun times. This was in '87 so I'll have to check out your other videos.

I was watching in turn 3 for that race. It inspired me to do Superbike School (GPz550's were the bike of choice) later that year. Who was in my session? Chuck Graves . . and I beat him!

I raced in A.R.R.A. at Willow in '87. Also ran in the WERA 24 hour that Wes Cooley was in not long after I think breaking his back or something like that. We were privateers on a bone stock FZ600 and he was riding a factory Yoshimura GSX-R. At night Wes passed me twice on the back straight in one session. One thing about Willow is to be fast you have to be willing to pass on the outside of 2 and 8. Almost everyone can go fast in the slow corners but, those two take big cajones.
